Default Cut out at high rpm

    Hi,
Just developed a new fault on my Yamaha WR500

Starts and runs fine at idle / low revs, but as soon as you rev it up it starts to cutout almost as if it's hitting the rev limiter, but at nowhere
    near full rpm

Checked overheat sensor - all OK. Faulty rev limiter??? wiring

    Any ideas

    Cheers, Tony.

Check your compression first. Then change your spark plugs. Next check to see if the spark is strong. Lastly inspect your internal (carb) as well as your external fuel filters.

    Thanks for your replies:-
Compression is 140Psi on both cylinders, 3 sets of plugs tried - same result.

Connected a strobe light and ran it, light fires OK until you rev it then at the same time as it appears to hit the rev limiter the strobe goes out as it stutters, indicating that the spark is switching off - it's the same for both plugs.

    CDI problem???

Check the resistance between the 2 spark plug wires. The plug caps may be bad. Also, unscrew the spark plug caps from the plug wires & cut the wires about a 1/2" back until you get a good solid wire. If this doesn't help you may need a new stator. When the CDI fails, it usually fails completely.

    Hi,

    Done all those tests:-
    Coil HT 5.5 Kohms
    LT 0.3 ohms
    Lighting Coil 1.2 ohms
    Pulser coil 104 ohms
    charge coil 88 ohms

Also trimed leads back 2 inches as suggested to clean wires

After all this - same problem

Connected a light to the LT side of the coil and that also dims/goes out
as the engine stutters, it is just like it is hitting the rev limiter, but why would it cut in so early?

    Arrggghhh, Tony.

Are you sure it's cutting out early? Post the RPM's at which it cuts out.
BTW, if you're doing this out of the water, the engine will easily rev up to the normal rev limiter setting at half throttle or less due to there being no load on the engine. How does it run on the water?
