MUNISING, Mich. Personal watercraft are now allowed in some parts of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
A ban on the watercraft was lifted when a final rule was published Thursday in the Federal Register.

Personal watercraft are now allowed along a six-mile stretch from Sand Point to the east end of Miners Beach. The remaining 34 miles of lakeshore, which stretches to Grand Marais, will still be closed to personal watercraft.

A ban of the watercraft was put in effect at Pictured Rocks and other National Park units in 2002, unless individual parks had special regulations in place to allow personal watercraft use. Before the ban, the watercraft could be used along the entire lakeshore at Pictured Rocks.
