Default do you have your operator's card?

i was gonna make a poll for this, but i am not seeing that option.

how many of you have a valid boat operator's card? did you take a course, or challenge the test? are you grandfathered by another certificate?

i am curious about these things for a few reasons. one, in the motorcycle world there are a lot of unlicensed riders. and they openly brag about it. two, i do not have my card, but i am grandfathered in by having a cya yachting course or two under my belt. of course, there is no record of me taking the courses, so i have to challenge the test. a friend has to get the card as well to buy a sailboat, but she is taking a sail squadron course.

i also have to get anyone that wants to take a second ski out to have a card too, despite the craft being mine, as thats how i read the law.

I was stopped on the Fraser River and they where looking for valid boat operator's card. You can be stopped anywhere... get your card.

She is doing the right thing by taking the squadron course.

Take a few hours, spend a few bucks, the test isn't hard. but not having your card can ruin your weekend and I would rather spend my time on the water having fun. We all hate it when our weekend is shortened because our craft has a problem, but if your craft is running great and the law won't let you ride, it's even worse.

you might want to go to the canadian coast guard site and get their safe boating guides. there are sample test available online, as well as onlinte testing thru various authorized test sites.
